SCS Provides Conformal Coating Education

As a global leader in conformal coating technologies and services, SCS is dedicated to providing educational opportunities that explore the advantages of conformal coatings for applications across the electronics, automotive, medical device, aerospace and defense industries. Following are snapshots of three educational presentations that SCS sponsored this spring.
Selecting the Right Conformal Coating for Harsh Environment Electronics
Electronics are required to perform in increasingly harsh environments that often include high humidity, temperature and voltage and exposure to corrosive chemicals and/or coastal environments. These environments introduce challenges such as exposure to moisture and static electricity that can not only hinder the component’s ability to perform reliably, but such exposure can cause premature failure as well. During this presentation, we explored the common harsh environments that electronics face across various markets and how conformal coatings provide necessary benefits to extend the life of electronics and electrical components.
Systematic Selection of Conformal Coatings for Electronics in Harsh Environments
The process of choosing the right conformal coating for electronic components that operate in harsh conditions is complex and critical, necessitating a scientific and organized approach to ensure maximum protection and long-term performance. This presentation examined the pivotal aspects that affect the selection of conformal coatings, including environmental factors like extreme temperatures, moisture, chemical exposure, vibrations and corrosive elements. The evaluation extends to material properties such as mechanical robustness, flexibility, dielectric capabilities and chemical resistance, evaluating their effectiveness at protecting applications. A systematic evaluation of coatings is necessary to select the best coating early in the process, mitigating potential issues down the road.
Increasing the Reliability of Components in the Semiconductor Manufacturing Process
The semiconductor manufacturing process involves numerous steps, many of which occur in highly corrosive environments. These extreme conditions contribute to the degradation and eventual failure of manufacturing system components, necessitating frequent component replacements that, in turn, increase operational costs. Additionally, once fabricated, semiconductors are integrated onto electronic boards and PCBs where they are exposed to a variety of environmental conditions. This presentation outlined the key stages of semiconductor manufacturing where protective conformal coatings are utilized to enhance component durability. It also focused on the role these coatings play in ensuring the performance and reliability of semiconductors across diverse applications.
